Indigenous People Are the First Ones Impacted by Western-Driven Resource Extraction

Fundraising for Ken Dennis

December 28, 2009

URGENT

Dear Friends and Relatives

Our friend, relative, and Spiritual teacher Ken Dennis has been diagnosed with a very aggressive form of esophageal cancer. The western doctors have told him that there is nothing more they can do to help him (treatment). Ken firmly believes in our ways – our medicines, ceremonies, and spiritual ways and is convinced this is what will help him. He has already undergone some ceremonies but needs to undergo more. He can gain the help of a medicine man, Keith Pache, from Manitoba.

In order to bring the medicine man (traditional healer) over to Chase, B. C. to see and treat Ken, we need to raise at least $2,000.00 in the next couple of weeks.

The medicine man is available between January 6-10, 2010. We will need to raise funds for his plane flight and honorarium.

We are calling upon all of Ken’s family, relatives, and friends to help out in his time of need.

Ken has helped out many people and now he needs our help.

Cash donations are needed as well as support in any fund-raising efforts.
Funds need to raised as quickly as possible.

Cash donations can be made at any Royal Bank. The account is set up in the Chase branch under Janice Billy and Dawn Morrison.

Report from the UBCIC Chiefs Council

I attended my first UBCIC meeting as Councillor for the Neskonlith Band. The meeting was held over two days in Vancouver at the Holiday Inn. The Chiefs in attendance covered a broad range of topics, from health to the mining industry.

The discussion over the two days centered on the proposed Recognition Act and its shortcomings. People say this is complex issue, on the surface it is. This is one in a long line of attempts to get British Columbia Crown Title in BC recognized. The recent Xeni Gwetin case really drove this point home. This legislation will give us recognition alright, but I think it will be more along the lines of the modern treaties that have been signed, than anything of substance, and real meaning. Why would it? Canada and BC still oppose the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. NOTE: Australia now supports the declaration, so now there are only three countries left.

If provincial recognition through legislation isn’t the answer, what do we as indigenous people do? Well we need to answer that on the ground at a grassroots level. On the ground we need to give expression to what our Aboriginal Title is. Stopping the developments that interfere with our cultural, spiritual, and economic activities on the land.

The Leadership Council has a series of regional forums on this topic that are planned this summer. The first one in Prince George already took place, with the Carrier Sekani Tribal Council expressing opposition. The next regional forum is in Cranbrook, which I will be attending, so if there is anyone from the area that would like to join me, contact me at the band office.

Kukpi7 Judy Wilson gave a report on the Walk4Justice that is taking place right now, that left Vancouver May 29th and was in Kamloops on June 1st. They are making their way north to Prince George and from there will walk the Highway 16. This highway is called the Highway of Tears because of all the women who have went missing along the highway. The chiefs promptly passed a box around and raised money for the women on the walk.
